Obviously The Hues Corporation and the folks at RCA Victor didn’t know what they had in “Rock The Boat.” The Hues Corporation album Freedom For The Stallion came out in 1974- a couple singles were released without much fanfare or success- then the third single from this R&B Disco vocal group was released- and it went to #1- The Hues Corporation would only have one other Top 40 hit. It wasn’t a fast riser though- for a few months upon release it got little airplay it wasn’t until the song became a favorite in the emerging discos in New York that it started to get noticed and played on the radio. It according to some- became the first #1 disco single ever- others give credit to “Love’s Theme” by Love Unlimited Orchestra as being the first. Depends on what one considers ‘disco.” Bottom line to remember with “Rock The Boat” without the DJ’s at the disco’s in New York City- no one would have ever heard this song- for good or ill.
