- Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman of Malaysia stepped down after 15 years having announced his resignation on August 30th. Abdul Halim of Kedah the new Yang di-Pertuan Agong- the elected Malaysian monarch asked Tun Abdul Razak- who was Rahman’s deputy to form a new government.
- Mike Matheny- former major league baseball catcher- and current manager of the Kansas City Royals was born on this day in Columbus, Ohio.
- Dr. Howard Snyder – a U.S. Army Major General- who was Physician to the President for Dwight Eisenhower- died at the age of 89.
- Dr. Alice Hamilton died at 101. The American physician was the first woman to be appointed to the faculty at Harvard University- in 1919.
