Gilbert O'Sullivan - Alone Again (Naturally) (1972, Vinyl) | Discogs

American Top 40- The 70’s- Week of September 9, 1972. A pretty good week of music- a lot of great well known hits and a good variety. Who would think the worst single on the list would be by one of the all-time immortals- Chuck Berry- but it was funny to hear Casey Kasem have to say “My Ding-A-Ling.”

  1. That is a good top 40! I see Rick Springfield…I don’t remember the guy until the 80s. His debut album in 72 went to #35…not great but not bad. I’ve never heard the song in this chart.

The Chuck Berry thing is odd…of all the songs. It would be like The Beatles only having one number 1 hit with Maxwell’s Silver Hammer. Not a great representation.

  2. The summer of ’72, I was fourteen and what a great time to be a Top 40 listener! Just reading those songs brings back specific good memories. However, I’d be fine if I never again heard the sappy “My Ding-a-Ling” or the suicidal “Alone Again Naturally.”
