“Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone” was first recorded by Undisputed Truth in early 1982- it only made it to #63 on the singles chart. Then in the hands of The Temptations it became one of the 1970’s classic hits. Rolling Stone ranked it at #169 on their 500 Greatest Songs Ever list. It was also The Temptations final #1 hit. The Temptations were not happy with the recording because the instrumentation got more emphasis than the vocals.

    • Can’t help but agree- what a great sounding record. I’ve noted before how often a group doesn’t like something- and it turns out they were wrong about it. I guess you never know.

  1. This song is a masterpiece, and my favorite of all The Temptations’ many wonderful songs. Yes, it’s the long and glorious instrumental intro that makes the song so incredible, but the brutal lyrics and vocals are pretty fantastic too.
