2020 Album Draft- Round 4 Pick 8- Cincinnati Babyhead selects- JJ Cale- Naturally.
Cincinnati Babyhead’s blog can be found at – https://cincinnatibabyhead.wordpress.com/
When Hans first approached me about this idea a few albums jumped into my head right away. J J Cale’s ‘Naturally’ was one of them. I’ve probably played it more than all my other records (might be a couple more up there with it). I dont know if there’s anyone one in the world that likes this album more than me. I know a few that like it just as much because he’s influenced so many musicians. I think you all know a lot of them. Here’s CB’s original take from way back. Man do I love this record.
Gonna keep this short.
Cincinnati Babyhead couldn’t resist this music. All sorts of styles, blues, jazz, rock, country… all done J.J. Cale style. Great guitar and vocals. Putting it all together.
Not a bad cut on the album. All songs contribute to one of Babyhead’s all time favorite records. ‘Magnolia’ is just beautiful. ‘Don’t Go To Strangers’ just sounds cool. ‘Crazy Mama’, ‘After Midnight’, what can CB say. Perfect. ‘Call Me The Breeze’, ‘Bringing It Back’, ‘Clyde’…..every song has it’s own cool vibe.

For such a mellow sounding musician/singer, he was a true original. Great choice.
My last word on JJ would be ‘Some cool music by one of the world’s coolest guys”
Very cool choice CB. JJ was so down to earth in his music. My introduction to him as a kid was Crazy Mama off of this album…then I heard him through other artists covering him. Great pick.
I have heard of JJ Cale of course but haven’t been exposed to much of his actual music. On the agenda for listening to this evening! I like the off the beaten path selections.
A debut album. Like he came out of nowhere and dropped this on us.
Hans. Early “exposure” for me and I’ve been there ever since. He did an album with Clapton a few years before he died. Check it out.
I have always known Cale – via Clapton covering a few of his tunes… Will check it out. Never too late discover something – the other day my brother played me – Gil Scott Heron- Small Talk at 125th and Lenox- from 50 years ago- and was blown away.
Cale pretty well hid from all the music industry bullshit and just made music. Guys like Clapton helped his bank account. There’s a good doc if you’re ever inclined.
Lots of treasures out there Hans. Yeah Gil has some good stuff.
I read an article somewhere a while back about Cale- and how he kept a low profile- yet kept making music- seems like the route to take.
The doc is cool. You get to see Eric showing is total respect and awe for the man (I think he wanted to be JJ). He is a fan of music just like us.
Will have to look for the doc!
JJ Cale’s name sounds familiar but that is about as far as my knowledge about him goes. The music is, as you say cool. He has that Tom Waits sound but a little more lively. The plan is to check out more of his stuff. Good choice to add seasoning to the music stew we have cooking in this draft 🙂
Being a Band and Clapton person it’s a pretty easy transition to JJ. He actually has a song called ‘Boiling Pot’. You’re on the same vibe.
I’m not very familiar with JJ Cale’s music, other than for his hit “Crazy Mama”, but I like his mellow vibe and smoky vocal style.
He’s under the radar for sure but worth checking out. He has a certain style that he doesnt get to far from.
Don’t know a lot about him or his music really other than he’s a friend and sometimes collaborator of Eric Clapton’s (and I guess wrote ‘After Midnight’ for him.). But cool that you like this record so much– just listening to ‘Don’t go to strangers’ now… nice late night feel to it. Classy looking raccoon too!
As long a EC and Mark Knopfler are playing music JJ lives.
I’ve never really considered becoming a JJ Cale fan but the raccoon on the cover convinced me to listen. I liked the piano on ‘Magnolia’.
The “raccoon” is the draw. I think he plays the bass.
Ladies Love Doug-the-Dumpster-Diver
Doug has to be a “dumpster diving” raccoon.
J.J. Cale with his cool sound naturally is a great choice. Love it – I don’t know whether as much as you do, CB! 🙂
And as much as I dig Mr. Slowhand’s take of “After Midnight,” nothing beats J.J. Cale’s no-sweat original!
Great song but I lean toward the original.
This is the most JJ Cale I’ve ever listened to, and now I don’t know why. The songs are sublime. Very nice listening. Very cool draft pick.
I wasnt kidding, this is a favorite. Dont stop, you wont be disappointed. Well maybe after midnight.
