Charley Pride was born in 1938 in Sledge, Mississippi. He was the first commercially successful black singer- and had 29 #1 hits on the Country Music Singles chart. Like Conway Twitty he had baseball aspirations- he played baseball in baseball’s Negro League before his career in music.
