Hans Remembers- Wednesday July 1, 1970- 50 Years Ago.
- In Rio de Janeiro 40 people on board a hijacked jet airplane were rescued by police after the hijackers threatened to kill the passengers- one by one. if their demands weren’t met. Their demands were of course to be flown to Cuba. The jet was on a flight to Bueno Aires, Argentina. The crew convinced the hijackers that the jet had to be refueled before its flight to Cuba. When it landed in Rio- the police flattened the jet’s tires with machine gun fire.
- In California there was a special election to fill the vacancies of two U.S. Representatives who had died in office- those of James Utt who died of a heart attack on March 1 and the seat of Glenard Lipscomb who died of cancer on February 1. The winners were two Republicans- John Schmidt- a member of the John Birch Society and John Rousselot.
- The western section of Pakistan formerly West Pakistan was reorganized into four sub national provinces each with their own provincial government, a system that has been in effect now for the past 50 years. East Pakistan would continue as a single province- until it became the nation of Bangladesh a year later.
and what happened to the passengers?
Jeez, really! I hope that plan didn’t backfire, shooting out the tires….
the passengers were rescued. all ended well.
Oh, yeah, that’s in the first sentence isn’t it, “rescued by police.” 🙂
I can’t even IMAGINE sitting on that plane as the authorities outside foiled the hijackers plans’, waiting for them to whirl around in a rage and spray everyone inside with bullets. Maybe the hijackers were just bluffing and weren’t really killers. Who knows.
That would be a horrible situation to be in- no way off the plane and who knows what kind of people you are dealing with.
