“Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” was written back in 1966. Dusty Springfield wanted to record it but Ashford and Simpson turned her down- they wanted Motown to record it. In 1967 Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell did- and it was a hit -#19. When I hear this song in my head its this version that I hear- not the #1 hit by Diana Ross. Before Diana Ross recorded as a solo artist- Diana Ross & The Supremes and The Temptations joined together and recorded it for an album they did together. In 1970- Diana Ross had to be convinced to record it again- and Motown chief Berry Gordy on first listen didn’t like it either- especially the spoken word part. Of course it gets released as a single and goes to #1 for 3 weeks.
