Born Mary Clayton in New Orleans in 1948- Merry Clayton was a session singer in Ray Charles back up group The Raelettes. She had 5 Hot 100 singles from 1970-78 none of them made the Top 40. This single a cover of The Rolling Stones classic and a good one at that.
Great cover and if you like it/want to know more about Merry Clayton and other under appreciated “backup” singers, I highly recommend “Twenty Feet From Stardom” documentary.
Will look for that Doc- thanks for the recommendation.
It’s really good. Won an Oscar I think. All about backup singers.
I have never heard of it! Sounds pretty interesting.
