30 Day Song Challenge- Day 20: A Song With A Number In The Title: “Eight Miles High”- The Byrds. I didn’t think very hard on this question but is there a better song ever with a number in the title than “Eight Miles High” by The Byrds? Some cite the song which was released in the spring of 1966 as being the first psychedelic rock song. The single reached #14 on the charts probably due to a broadcast ban on it due to perceived drug connotations in the lyrics. It has always sounded like a #1 hit to my ears- my favorite Byrds song and one of the greatest songs of the 60’s or well ever!

The way they play the music makes you feel like you’re 8 miles high. One of their best tunes.
Fantastic song blending the classic Byrds guitar and vocal harmony sound with psychedelic influences. It’s definitely one of my favorites by this band as well!
A great, great pioneering song. While it sputtered in the charts because of the radio ban, the young musicians and songwriters of that era were absolutely amazed by the song’s rule-breaking audacity; combining rock ‘n’ roll with John Coltrane and Ravi Shankar!
Still sounds fresh over 50 years later.
This is one of those songs I wish was about fifteen minutes long. The latter years Byrds did a 15-20 minute live version (including individual instrument solos), but inexplicably only sang the first verse. Also, a tip of the hat to the much underappreciated Gene Clark for the co-write on this one.
Gene Clark has to go on the list of most underappreciated rock musicians of the 60’s or anytime.. can you shoot me an email- I need your email address to put you on the mailing list for the Albums Picks.. Thanks.
