The Jackson 5’s first hit- went to #1- their first four singles went to #1 in 1970- this was released in 1969 and The Jackson 5 made appearances in the fall of 1969 on Diana Ross’s The Hollywood Palace and The Ed Sullivan Show promoting the single. Rolling Stone ranks it at #121 on their 500 Greatest Songs Ever list. It sold over 6 million copies worldwide. The song was originally going to be recorded by Gladys Knight and The Pips and later by Diana Ross as “I Want To Be Free.’ The b-side “Who’s Lovin’ You” which was written by Smokey Robinson and had been recorded by Smokey Robinson and The Miracles. Michael Jackson was eleven years old when “I Want You Back” was recorded and released.
