30 Day Song Challenge- Day 9- A Song Title That Has Three Words: “Watching The Detectives.” “Watching The Detectives” was not on the UK release of Elvis Costello’s debut album My Aim Is True but it was added on the US release as the final track on side 1. The song was inspired by The Clash and motion picture composer Bernard Herrmann- and features a reggae beat. I have always thought that a couple years later Stevie Wonder kind of nicked “Watching The Detectives” with his “Master Blaster.” Rolling Stone magazine ranked “Watching The Detectives” at #363 on their 500 Greatest Songs Ever list. It certainly is an early Elvis Costello highlight.

Excellent tune. So much to love about it.
What a great song. And where did you get that paperback cover? I have a truckload of those old murder/mysteries.Love the era.
found it in a search. Great cover.
Wow. Reading the words on that cool pulp paperback cover thing reminds me that this guy was the best lyricist of his generation.
I am in agreement with you.
Not to mention maybe the best melodist…?
Great song.
