The first three #1 hits in 1968 were all one-hit wonders- “Judy In Disguise”- John Fred & Hit Playboy Band, ‘Green Tambourine”- The Lemon Pipers and then “Love Is Blue”-Paul Mauriat. The Lemon Pipers were a band formed in Oxford, Ohio where they were all students at Miami of Ohio University. . “Green Tambourine” is considered the first bubblegum pop #1. The band didn’t really care for “Green Tambourine” and reluctantly recorded it. The band was a rock band but after their success with “Green Tambourine” stayed ‘bubblegum.” They never had another hit.
