REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS PAST– 1970’S TELEVISION COMMERCIALS: KEEP AMERICA BEAUTIFUL COMMERCIAL

Keep America Beautiful' History - Item # VAREVCSBDPOLLCS001 ...

The Keep America Beautiful commercial starring Iron Eyes Cody was one of the most memorable commercials well- ever. It first came out in 1971. I remember growing up in the 60’s- and I don’t know if this is how it was across the nation but in the area where I grew up it seemed like garbage was everywhere. The air was terribly polluted due to the steel mills in the area. People would just throw their trash out the windows as they were driving down the road. The side of the road at least as I recall was always full of litter. I also remember on the outside of the town I lived- junk cars just sat abandoned near the road. In the 1970’s it seemed like all that changed. Due to new laws that air became cleaner.  I would like to think that this commercial helped change things but I’d guess there is no way of measuring it. I do know more of an effort was put into stopping the littering. Turns out Iron Eyes Cody- was actually not a Native American at all- his name was Espera Oscar de Corti, this was revealed when he died in 1999. Either way to me as a kid it was a commercial that got my attention.

  1. He sure looked the part. I do think this commercial made a difference…it made a difference to me as a kid. Now it would get lost.
