The Four Tops replaced label mates The Supreme’s at the top of the charts. This was the fourth Motown #1 hit in 1965- and like The Supreme’s “I Can’t Help Myself {Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch} was written by the songwriting team of Holland, Dozier, Holland and also produced by them- and the instrumentation was also done by The Funk Brothers. Four Tops had hit the charts first in 1964 with two Top 40 hits. “I Can’t Help Myself” was their first #1- they would have their second #1 in 1966 with one of the greatest of all Motown hits- “Reach Out I’ll Be There.”
