All That Jazz: Essential Jazz Recordings: “My Favorite Things”- John Coltrane.

“My Favorite Things” comes off of John Coltrane’s 7th album My Favorite Things which was released in 1960..  It is the first album which features Coltrane playing soprano saxophone.  The song was written by Oscar Hammerstein and Richard Rodgers for The Sound Of Music in 1959. The 14 minute Coltrane version quickly became a Coltrane signature song in concert for Coltrane and remains one of the favorite jazz recordings to this day.

Musicians on “My Favorite Things”- McCoy Tyner who passed away last week- on the piano, Steve Davis on double bass, and Elvin Jones on drums- and of course Coltrane on soprano sax.

  1. I love this. I tried for some time as an adult to ‘get’ jazz. Then, one evening in 1988, tripping on LSD in a bedsit in south London, confused & unable to properly change cassettes, I listened to My Favourite Things for several hours non stop… & fell in love. It remains one of my desert island discs. Ace! x
