I Love The Smell Of Punk In The Morning: “Career Opportunities”- The Clash.
“Career Opportunities” the first song on side 2 of The Clash’s self-titled debut which came out in the spring of 1977. The song written by Joe Strummer and Mick Jones – is sung by Strummer. The song deals with the economic situation in England at the time- and the lack of job opportunities for the youth of the nation. The line about opening letter bombs- refers to a real job that Mick Jones had at one point- opening letters for a British government department to make sure they weren’t rigged with mailbombs.
Incredible about the job. Excellent tune. Political statement at its best.
I instantly liked this band when I first heard them. It was cuts like this that did it.
