Hans Remembers- Tuesday February 24, 1970- 50 years ago.

- Avalanches in Switzerland and France killed at least 36 people in the European Alps. In Switzerland snow swept down a mountain into the village of Reckingen destroying an army barracks and killing 29 people- many of whom were officers in the Swiss Army. A separate avalanche in France struck the Hotel du Gran Signal in the ski resort of Villard-de-Lans killing at least seven guests.

- Star of film. stage, television and radio -Conrad Nagel died at the age of 72 due to natural causes. Nagel was considered a matinee idol during the 20’s and 30’s- his main era was the silent movie era when he made dozens of movies.

- Former Major League Baseball pitcher Wilson Alvarez who won 102- lost 92 and had a 3.96 ERA during 14 major league seasons most of his success came with the Chicago White Sox where he had two seasons where he won 15 games. Alvarez turns 50 today.

- Also turning 50 former NFL quarterback Jeff Garcia- a four time pro bowl selection he played in the NFL from 1999-2011- he is remembered most for his seasons with the San Francisco 49ers where he was the quarterback who replaced Steve Young [who had replaced Joe Montana}
