- 24 of the 27 sailors on board the Venezuelan merchant ship Pampatar were killed from an explosion in the kitchen and subsequent fire and panic in the evacuation. The ship was ten miles off the coast of La Guaira. The captain of the ship Luis Martinez was one of the survivors. He would report that some of the crewman jumped off the ship and were attacked by sharks while waiting to be rescued.
It’s why regular inspections and emergency drills need to be done. What a horrific tragedy 😦
