Actor Robert Conrad dead at 84. He starred in the television series Wild Wild West and Ba Ba Black Sheep- and other television shows and movies but when I hear the name I always think first of the Eveready Batteries Commercial- below.

  1. I’ll never forget Bob Conrad getting all fired up about an alleged rule infraction on “Battle of the Network Stars” in 1976 and having a 100-yard race-duel with Gabe Kaplan (Welcome Back Kotter). Kaplan crushed him. Just found and watched the video on YouTube. Conrad always seemed to have a chip/battery on his shoulder.

    • Ah- I forgot all about that incident until you just mentioning it. I agree he did seem to have a chip on his shoulder. Those shows seem funny now- The Battle of the Network Stars and the Superstars competition. As a kid I remember taking them seriously lol… favorite highlight of Superstars- was Smokin’ Joe Frazier in the swimming- walking instead of swimming and being disqualified. Turns out he didn’t know how to swim.

    • LOL!… I never knew if Kyle Rote Jr was any good at soccer but he seemed to win that Superstar’s competition every time..

    • Kyle Rote, Jr.! That’s a name I haven’t heard in a LONG time. He and Pele were the ONLY soccer players Americans could name. I remember Rote Sr. doing the commentary on NFL games. Very reserved and soft-spoken.

    • Yes at that time soccer was certainly an underground sport in the US. I think you are right at the time I could name Pele and because of Superstars- Rote Jr. Thinking about it now- Rote Jr had to have been a pretty good athlete- and with a father who was a football star- odd that he went for a sport that certainly wasn’t a front line sport in the US at the time. He must have loved soccer. Won Superstars 3 times in 4 years.
