- Hurricane force wins leveled the village of Angmagsalik, Greenland. Ten buildings were destroyed and the rest in the town of 800 sustained damage of some sort but the residents were prepared and had taken shelter- there were no injuries.
- The National Basketball Association announced it would be expanding beginning in the 1970-71 season by adding the Buffalo Braves, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Portland Trailblazers.
- The dollar became the official currency of Bermuda as the British Overseas Territory abandoned the pound and converted to decimal currency.
- Aeroflot Flight U-45 crashed in Uzbek SSR, Soviet Union during its approach to Samarkand after a 162 mile flight from Tashkent. 84 of the 98 on board were killed.
