“Shilo” was the first of seven Hot 199 singles for Neil Diamond in 1970- six of those single would make the Top 40- including a #1 in “Cracklin’ Rosie” the first of his three #1 hits in his career. At Erasmus High School in Brooklyn he was a classmate of Barbra Streisand’s and both were members of the Freshman Chorus and Choral Club. How was the school big enough to contain both of those egos? If you look up that high school and see the list of notable alumni- I can’t imagine another high school in the country that could match that schools star power. There are states that can’t match the talent that went through those doors over the years.

Neil Diamond is a problematic artist- I find some of his earlier stuff brilliant and then he jumped the shark into very easy listening late in the 70’s. “Shilo” falls into brilliant.
