Sweet Soul Music of the 70’s- “Cruisin'”- Smokey Robinson.
While Smokey Robinson will always be associated with his time at Motown with his group The Miracles from 1959-1972 and as Motown’s premier songwriter- he did go on to a successful career after he left The Miracles and went solo- especially in the 1970’s and early 80’s. His biggest solo hit was 1981’s “Being With You” a #2 hit but his second most successful single on the charts is my favorite Smokey solo song- “Cruisin” #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and also #4 on the Soul Singles chart- and went to #1 in New Zealand. Written by Smokey and Marvin Tarplin- it was on Smokey’s “Where There’s Smoke”..album in 1979. It was originally going to be a b-side- and when Smokey recorded it he had a cold. This is a single I can listen to over and over and never tire of.
Warm summer night with the windows open, cruisin along, yes. I can’t think of a better song to go cruisin (except maybe Thunder Road.)
