631. “I Started Loving You Again”- Al Martino. Capitol. Pop. Written by Merle Haggard. B-side:”Let Me Stay Awhile With You” Peaked at #86 5 weeks on the chart. Al Martino had 35 Hot 100 singles from 1959-77 his biggest hit being “I Love You Because” #3 1963. “I Started Loving You Again” was a big country hit by Merle Haggard who wrote it. Grade: C

632. “Don’t Let Him Take Your Love From Me”- The Four Tops. Motown. Soul. Written by Barrett Strong and Norman Whitfield. B-side: “The Key.” Peaked at #45 7 weeks on the chart. The Four Tops had two Hot 100 hits in 1969 but neither made the Top 40. They were bigger in the middle part of the decade when they had 2 #1 hits with “I Can’t Help Myself” 1965 and “Reach Out I’ll Be There” in 1966. Grade: B

633. “Lady-O” – The Turtles. White Whale. Pop . Written by Judee Sill. B-side:” Somewhere Friday Nite” Peaked at #78 4 weeks on the chart. The Turtles 4th Hot 100 hit of 1969- the only one that cracked the Top 40 was “You Showed Me” #6- their final Top 40 hit of their careers. Grade: B

634. “Camel Back”- A.B. Skhy. MGM. Rock. Written by Howard Wales. B-side:” Just What I Needed” Peaked at #100 1 week on the chart. A.B. Skhy was a rock band from San Francisco. This instrumental was the only Hot 100 hit for the band- #100 1 week but they made it once! Grade: C.
I like the first song, but not as sung by Al Martino. The last song could be a theme song for a 60’s hippy series 🙂
The Merle original is the Go To- version for sure. It is a much covered song.
