The four singles today debuted in the Hot 100 on September 20, 1969- “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling”- Dionne Warwick, “Jesus Is A Soulman”-Lawrence Reynolds, “Let A Woman Be A Woman- Let A Man Be A Man”- Dyke And The Blazers and “Love Of The Common People”- The Winstons.

488. “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling”- Dionne Warwick. Scepter. Pop. Written by Phil Spector, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. B-side:”Window Washing” Peaked at #16 and spent 10 weeks on the chart. The 4th of 5 hits in 1969 by Warwick- 4 of the 5 made the Top 40. A much covered song over the years of course the go -to version is by The Righteous Brothers. Grade: C

489. “Jesus Is A Soulman”- Lawrence Reynolds. Warner Brothers. Country. Written by Jack Cardwell and Lawrence Reynolds. B-side:” I Know A Good Girl {When I Hold One} Peaked at #28 and spent 10 weeks in the Hot 100. The only Hot 100 hit by Lawrence a pop/country singer. Grade: C.

 

490. “Let A Woman Be A Woman- Let A Man Be A Man”- Dyke and The Blazers. Original Sound. Funk. Written by Art Barrett and Art Laboe. B:side:”Uhh” Peaked at #36 and spent 11 weeks in the Hot 100. Funk band out of Buffalo who had 4 Hot 100 hits- their two in 1969 were the only ones that made the Top 40. Grade: B

491. “Love Of The Common People” The Winstons. Metro Media. Soul. Written by J.Hurley and R. Wilkins. B-side:Wheel of Fortune” Peaked at #54 and spent 6 weeks on the chart. This R&B septet out of Washington, D.C. had 2 hits both in 1969- their earlier hit during the year was their biggest “Color Me Father”- #7. The most famous version of “Love Of The Common People” was from Waylon Jennings in 1967. Grade: B-.
