457. “By The Time I Get To Phoenix”- Isaac Hayes. Enterprise. Soul. Written by Jimmy Webb. B-side: this is the b-side to “Walk On By” which was also a Top 40 hit. Peaked at #37 and spent 8 weeks on the chart. Frank Sinatra has called “By The Time I Get To Phoenix” the greatest torch song ever written. There have been hundreds of covers- the first was by Johnny Rivers in 1965 but the two most famous are Glen Campbell’s which won two Grammy Awards and this version by Isaac Hayes. I will include both the shortened version for the single and the album cut of it- where Hayes turns into an 18 minute 40 second epic story. If you have time listen to the long cut. Grade: A+.
