- JOE WALSH: YOU BOUGHT IT- YOU NAMED IT: 1983: ROCK: GRADE: C. VINYL: I really liked But Seriously Folks and There Goes The Neighborhood was decent so when this came out I bought it- a big disappointment. A couple songs are alright- I Can Play That Rock and Roll and maybe Class of ’65. The rest is Joe trying to be funny- it falls flat.

- CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL: COSMOS FACTORY: 1970: ROCK: GRADE: A+. VINYL: Travelin’ Band, Lookin’ Out My Back Door, Run Through The Jungle, Up Around The Bend, Who’ll Stop The Rain, Long As I Can See The Light- essential CCR. At 11:05 their cover of “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” is about 9 minutes too long.

- NICK LOWE: NICK THE KNIFE: 1982: ROCK: GRADE: B. VINYL: Nick’s third album- his first two were brilliant- so this one has always seemed like a disappointment to me- Heart is a great song but I like the earlier Rockpile version more. “Stick It Were The Sun Don’t Shine”, “Burning”, “Queen Of Sheba”,”Too Many Teardrops” are songs to hear- not a bad album just not up to the standards he set earlier.
Awesome CCR.
You got bugs in your iPod. 😄
You’re influencing me Beatlesward. I had a multitude of things I could have written about but picked warm guns because of our conversations recently.
I’m have always been a pusher- music-wise. If we had known each other decades ago I would have been making you mixed tapes of stuff.
I checked out Astral Works. 1. That’s a tiny bit before your time in a way. 2. I don’t think I every heard any of the songs on it. 🙂
Oh the 1960’s were before my time- as far as music goes- I was 9 in 1970- and my dad was into good country music- Cash, Haggard, Jones, Owens, Jones…. not pop or rock music…. I will say this about Astral Weeks- it needs a few listens to really kick in I think.
I even got the name of it wrong! Sorry about that.
Where are you on Southern Rock?
Not a huge fan- I do like the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynard before the crash if they fall under Southern Rock. I am sure there are probably a couple others too and some random songs.
I just met a nuevo Southern rock band. Adorable kids. I keep looking for milk behind their ears. But their rockin’ the free world.
I haven’t heard of them…
Sorry, I forgot to leave their name. The Georgia Thunderbolts.
I thought you had said they were Adorable Kids.. thought that an odd name for a group but I’ve heard worse.!!
This cracked me up.
‘Cosmos’ is a real good one. “9 min too long”. Love the ways songs hit people differently. Ears like diff things. I like the long jam and would have missed John’s solos. I love his guitar.
Anyone that gives Lowe any love has my attention. I have some catching up to do on your takes. Man are you prolific!
I can’t say that I ‘hate’ CCR’s Grapevine– but when I listen to an album I never skip a song over- there are just sometimes I wish that thing was a little shorter. Not a big fan of long jams..
I get it. I was kinda weened on jams (Traffic, Cream,Santana etc). John probably wanted to stretch out all his songs but his restraint worked on many of them.
Always thought it was interesting how they always had a great cover or two mixed in with the great Fogerty classics on all those albums.
I think they nailed ‘Good Golly Miss Molly’
I love these conversations back and forth. It’s a little bit like trying to follow someone speaking Latin, lol….
But I learn a few things.
Always fun!
🙂
