The Sounds of Summer- Day 61 out of 95: “School’s Out”- Alice Cooper. When summer officially started school had been out around here for weeks- so I made the mistake and didn’t lead off with “School’s Out.” Today is back to school day in my town and since there is no song called “School’s In” and since “School’s Out” is an essential to have in this feature I am going to go with it. The single was released in late April 1972, written by the Alice Cooper Band- Alice once said he was inspired to write the song when answering the question, “What’s the greatest three minutes of your life?”. Cooper said: “There’s two times during the year. One is Christmas morning, when you’re just getting ready to open the presents. The greed factor is right there. The next one is the last three minutes of the last day of school when you’re sitting there and it’s like a slow fuse burning. I said, ‘If we can catch that three minutes in a song, it’s going to be so big.'” The single went to #7 in the US and topped the chart in the UK. A great summer anthem. Alice got it right.
