Every Entry Into The Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart -1969- Part 82. All four singles featured today entered the chart on May 17, 1969- “We Got More Soul”- Dyke And The Blazers, “The April Fools”- Dionne Warwick, ‘ Why I Sing The Blues”- B.B. King, and “In -A -Gadda- Da- Vida”- Iron Butterfly.

253. “We Got More Soul”- Dyke And The Blazers. Original Sound. Funk Soul. Written by Arlester Christian. B-side: “Shotgun Slim.” A funk band from Buffalo. They had 4 Top 100 hits  this and their next 1969 single “Let A Woman Be A Woman- Let A Man Be A Man” the only Top 40 hits they had. “We Got More Soul” peaked at #35 and spent 10 weeks on the chart. Singer Arlester Christian was shot to death in Phoenix in 1971. Grade: B-.

254. The April Fools”- Dionne Warwick. Scepter. Pop. Written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. B-side” Slaves.” Another Dionne song written by Bacharach and David-it was her second of five 1969 Hot 100 hits with 4 of the 5 cracking the Top 40. The song was the theme from the movie starring Jack Lemmon of the same name. The single peaked at #37 and spent 7 weeks on the chart. Grade: B

255. “Why I Sing The Blues”-B.B. King. Bluesway. Blues Soul. Written by B.B. King. B-side: “Friends.” B.B. had 36 Hot 100 hits in his career but only 7 made the Top 40. His biggest hit “The Thrill Is Gone” #15 later in 1969. “Why I Sing The Blues” peaked at #61 and spent 10 weeks on the chart. Grade: A-

256. “In -A- Gadda- Da- Vida”- Iron Butterfly. Atco. Rock. Written by Doug Ingle and Ron Tepper. B-side:”Iron Butterfly Theme” Iron Butterfly had 5 Hot 100 singles in their career but this was their only Top 40 hit. The hard rock band was from San Diego. The most famous version of the song is the long album version. The shortened single peaked at #30 and spent a dozen weeks on the chart. I have included both the single version and the long version of the song. Grade: A-.

  1. Dionne W. has such a sweet voice.
    I’m woefully ignorant of the music world (in guess you haven’t guessed already) and in the mid-90s at work I couldn’t understand what someone was saying in a show I was captioning and a co-worker told me, “He’s saying In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida,” and basically I’d thought the co-worker was having a stroke or something…….. !

  2. Oh! Haha. I got it! Someone was probably really drunk, right?! That’s what it sounds like if you say In the Garden of Eden really fast while mumbling……
