The legendary folk singer/ political activist Baez covers two songs from her former boyfriend Bob Dylan on this single. In her career she had 9 Hot 100 singles with 3 making the Top 40. Her biggest hit was her butchering of The Band’s classic “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” #3 in 1971. “Love Is A Four Letter Word”- peaked at #86 and spent 4 weeks in the Hot 100. Grade: B-
214. “Greensleeves” -Mason Williams. Warner Brothers. Folk. Adapted by Mason Williams. B-Side: “$13 Stella.” Williams is known best for his 1968 #2 hit “Classical Gas” which went to #2 his only Top 40 hit. He had 4 Hot 100 singles- “Greensleeves” an instrumental would be the last entry into the Hot 100 it peaked at #90 and spent 2 weeks on the chart. Grade: B-
215. “Both Sides, Now”- Dion. Laurie. Pop. Written by Joni Mitchell. B-Side “Sun Fun Song.” This was Dion’s second entry into the Hot 100 in 1969- a cover of the much covered Joni Mitchell classic “Both Sides, Now.” It was a #8 hit for Judy Collins- for Dion #91 and 2 weeks on the chart. Grade: B
216. “Home To You’- Earth Opera. Elektra. Rock. Written by Peter Rowan. B-side ” Alfie Finney.” Earth Opera was a rock quartet out of Boston. This was their one and only Hot 100 entry- it peaked at #97 it’s only week in the Hot 100. Grade: C
I absolutely adore “Love is Just a Four-Letter Word”. And I can’t believe you think Joan Baez butchered “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”! Your dislike or dismissal of so many songs completely baffles me! You are one of the worst music snobs I’ve ever encountered.
