198. “Earth Angel { Will You Be Mine} – The Vogues. Reprise. Pop. Written by Curtis Williams, Jesse Belvin and Gaynel Hodge. B-side ” P.S. I Love You.” This is the 2nd of 5 Top 100 singles The Vogues had in 1969- only one of the five made the Top 40 for the Turtle Creek, Pennsylvania vocal group. “Earth Angel” in 1955 had been a Top 10 hit for two different groups- Crew Cuts #3 and Penguins #5, also that year Gloria Mann took it to #18. The Vogue cover peaked at #42 and spent 6 weeks in the Hot 100. The b-side -“P.S. I Love You” is not a cover of The Beatles song of the same name  “Earth Angel” is a great song- but the go-to version is by the Penguins not The Vogues.  Grade: C

199. “I’m A Drifter”- Bobby Goldsboro. United Artists. Pop. Written by Bobby Goldsboro. B-side “Hoboes and Kings.” The last thing I’d think Bobby Goldsboro was- was a drifter- with his never never out of place helmet hair. But I guess before he watched Scotty Grow- in 1970- he was a drifter. This was Goldsboro’s second of three Hot 100 singles in 1969- none made the Top 40. “I’m A Drifter” peaked at #46 and spent 10 weeks in the Hot 100. Grade: C+

  1. You had me spitting out my coffee at this: “The last thing I’d think Bobby Goldsboro was- was a drifter- with his never never out of place helmet hair.”

  2. I remember “Earth Angel” but not that version and I think it was in a soundtrack for “American Graffiti” or some other movie from that era. Good song.
