EVERY ENTRY INTO THE BILLBOARD HOT 100 SINGLES CHART- 1969- PART 63

Every Entry Into The Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart- 1969- Part 63. The three singles today all entered the Hot 100 chart on April 12, 1969- “Happy Heart”- Petula Clark, “Singing My Song”- Tammy Wynette and ” Any Day Now” Percy Sledge. None of them came close to being a Top 40 pop hit.

188. “Happy Heart”- Petula Clark. Warner Brothers. Pop. Written by James Last and Jackie Rae. B-side”Love Is The Only Thing.” Andy Williams version of this song was a higher debut on April 12, 1969 and became the hit version going to #22. Petula Clark’s version went to #62 and spent 5 weeks on the chart. In her career Petula Clark had 22 Hot 100 hits on the Billboard chart- with 15 making the Top 40. her biggest hit being “Downtown”  1964 #1 and “My Love” #1 in 1965. She is still active as she approaches her 90th birthday. Grade: B+

189. “Singing My Song”- Tammy Wynette. Epic . Country. Written by Tammy Wynette, Billy Sherrill and Glenn Sutton. B-side “Too Far Gone.” Tammy Wynette was much more successful on the country charts where she had 20 #1 singles- her two most famous being ‘Stand By Your Man” and “D-I-V-O-R-C-E.” On the pop charts she had 12 Top 100 singles with 2 going Top 40- her biggest pop success “Stand By Your Man” #19. She is also remembered for her string of albums with her husband they were married from 1969-75. “Singing My Song” peaked at #75 5 weeks on the chart. Grade: C

190. “Any Day Now”- Percy Sledge. Atlantic. R&B Soul. Written by Bob Hilliard and Burt Bacharach. B-side ” The Angels Listened In.” Percy Sledge had 14 Hot 100 singles with 5 making the Top 40- of course the Percy Sledge song that everyone remembers is “When A Man Loves A Woman” #1 1966. “Any Day Now” peaked at #86 and spent 4 weeks on the chart. The song had been a hit for Chuck Jackson in 1962 #23 and would be a #14 for Ronnie Milsap in 1982. Elvis Presley also recorded it.  Grade: B-

  1. Aha I see the hit breakdown on Petula, I was right! I love love love Tammy Wynette’s voice. A lot of the songs she sang were about trying to keep philandering husbands out of other women’s beds and her voice had that almost wailing tone that was perfect for those lyrics. Being married to GJones probably didn’t help matters lol. “Any Day Now” is an A+ song to me. Not sure I’m crazy about Percy’s version but…

    • The version I am familiar with for some reason is the Ronnie Milsap version… I bet that George and Tammy marriage was a real trip on a daily basis..

    • Not sure if I remember Happy Heart at all. You can see the bad boy gleam in his eyes right off the bat. What can I say, a lot of women are drawn to bad boys (and a lot of men to bad girls!)
