“Time To Play B-Sides”- “I’m Not Like Everybody Else”- The Kinks. The B-side to “Sunny Afternoon” a UK #1, US #14 in 1966- “I’m Not Like Everybody Else” was written by The Kinks main songwriter Ray Davies and sung by his brother Dave. This song of non-conformity was written by Ray  Davies for The Animals but was rejected. When I hear this song today– one of my many favorites by The Kinks- I think first of The Sopranos-the song was featured in the season five episode called “Cold Cuts.”  The song has been covered by many artists over the years the most notable version being the 1968 one by The Chocolate Watch Band. It has also been used in an IBM television commercial. I think it could have been a hit on its own- but at the time The Kinks were producing a lot of great music.

  1. you always need to play the b sides. some of the best stuff is there. My favorite b side is “I Should Have Known Better”, the b side to “A Hard Day’s Night”. The opening harmonica by John Lennon is classic.
