“Time To Play B-Sides”- “The Wind Cries Mary”- Jimi Hendrix.  “The Wind Cries Mary” a rock ballad written by Jimi Hendrix was the b-side to “Purple Haze.” Hendrix wrote the song after an argument with his girlfriend Kathy Etchingham. The song was recorded in January 1967 and was produced by Chas Chandler. It is one of Hendrix most remembered songs- Rolling Stone placed it as #379 on their 500 Greatest Songs Ever list. A number of artists have covered the song- including— Pat Boone. “The Wind Cries Mary” wouldn’t appear on any of the three studio albums Hendrix released but first appeared on his Smash Hits album released in 1969.

    • OK, ingeniously, I’m replying to my own comment, since I accidentally hit send – I guess I should finish my morning coffee first before leaving clever remarks! 🙂

      In any case, what I wanted to say is that for a long time, I only liked ‘Hey Joe.’ Other Hendrix songs sounded too chaotic to my ears at the time. I was a young teen who was completely infatuated with early The Beatles and their “clean” music and “pretty” harmony singing.

      Eventually, Hendrix became one of my favorite artists, though I will add that after listening to one album, I usually like to take a break. While fantastic from a technical and sound standpoint, his guitar gyrates can get a bit overwhelming after some time! 🙂

    • I certainly like Jimi Hendrix and respect his work and all- and I have a couple friends who are fanatical Hendrix fans- while I like him I’ve never been close to fanatical.
