The Sounds of Summer- Day 19 of 95 -“Hot Fun In The Summertime”- Sly and The Family Stone. Released in the middle of the summer of 1969-‘ Hot Fun In The Summertime” went to #2 on the Hot 100 chart- blocked out of #1 by The Temptation’s “I Can’t Get Next To You.” Rolling Stone ranked it at #247 on their 500 Greatest Songs Ever list and it has made a number of Greatest Summer Songs lists. It was one of the first songs I thought of when I started thinking about a list of summer songs. The song was written by front man Sly Stone. The producer of the song was Doris Day’s son Terry Melcher. The song is also notable as one of the few times Sly and The Family Stone used strings in a song. If I were to make a Top 10 summer singles list this would have to be on that list.
Love, love, love this song! The horns and that piano riff are fantastic.
It’s a lush wonderful tune that I never grow tired of hearing.
