  • Barbra Streisand would be on hand to open the newest and biggest casino and resort in Las Vegas- The International Hotel.  The hotel had 1510 rooms and 30 stories. It would change names over the years and 1981-90 it was the largest hotel in the world. Today it is known as Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino.It now has 2956 rooms.

  • Today was a day of changes to The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Bassist Noel Redding and Drummer Mitch Mitchell both quit the band at the conclusion of the Denver Pop Festival.

  • Born on this date American Latin music singer Jenni Rivera in Long Beach, California. Rivera would be killed in a plane crash in Mexico in 2012

  1. Jenni Rivera’s name does not ring a bell. Why did the band members walk out on Jimi? 2900 rooms in a hotel??? Truly mind-boggling. I don’t remember seeing that one when I went to Vegas for the first time a few years ago. I stayed at Mandalay Bay but have no idea how many rooms it has.

    • Mitchell ended up staying but Jimi and Redding weren’t getting along and Jimi added members to the band without consulting Redding so that was enough- he split…. I had never heard of Rivera until her death.

  2. The Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino, if full to capacity, and counting stall and non-staying patrons, would be far bigger than the town I currently live in. I’d probably die from claustrophobia.
