Sounds of Summer- Day 2 of 95- “Summertime” by Sam Cooke. A jazz standard- “Summertime ” was  written by Du Bose Heyward and George and Ira Gershwin in the mid 1930’s for Porgy and Bess- it was first a hit for the great Billie Holiday in 1936. Over the years it has been covered by a number of artists from Ella Fitzgerald to Ricky Nelson- and Janis Joplin -Big Brother And The Holding Company. Billy Stewart had the biggest hit with the song in 1966 taking it to #10 but my favorite version is by Sam Cooke- one of the great voices in pop history. He released it early in his solo career- in fact it was the b-side of his first single in 1957- “You Send Me”-which went to #1. “Summertime” as the b-side peaked at #81.

  1. Very pleasant and mellow. Great voice. I learned from All Things Thriller all about Mr. Cooke and what happened to him. Another tragic premature death.
