89. “The Weight” by Aretha Franklin. Atlantic. Soul. Written by Robbie Robertson. B-side: “Tracks Of My Tears.” A cover of The Band’s 1968 single which peaked at #63. Aretha would take it to #19 and it would spend 7 weeks on the Hot 100. Duane Allman plays slide guitar on this version of “The Weight.” Aretha would have six Hot 100 singles in 1969. 90. “The Letter” The Arbors. Date. Rock. Written by Wayne Thompson. B-side: ‘Most Of All.” The Arbors were a pop band which formed in Ann-Arbor, Michigan-where the bnd members went to school at the University of Michigan. They would have a total of 4 Hot 100 singles but this was the only one which made it to the Top 40- peaking at #20 and spending 10 weeks in the Hot 100. This is a cover of the Box Tops 1967 #1- a slowed down and inferior version to be sure. I can’t believe this was a hit. Grade: D
I like the first song, my ear is adjusting to Aretha’s cover of The Weight, seems a little too fast tempo, but maybe not. The last one hell no, even tho they are from A2!
I don’t mind the Arbors’ ‘The Letter’. It’s sort of quiet but very nice
That’s funny. I’d give The Weight a C, Don’t want to Cry a B+ and The Letter something like a B-. Although if I was in a different mood, that would probably downgrade to a C+ ’cause it IS really slow and sort of draggy. 🙂 A “D” is pretty severe, though, lol !!
I thought this version of The Letter is very inferior to the Box Tops version. I know what you mean about mood playing a factor..
I’m gonna check out the Box Tops version. I can already imagine once I hear it, then I’ll start hating THIS version, ha ha. 🙂
Oh, duh! Of course! That’s the famous version. Yeah, much livelier, totally. I started to click off after about a minute and my husband goes from across the room, “Let it finish. That’s a good song!”
I vote for the Arbors. I always found the Boxtops abrasive for some reason. Never liked their version. I classed that with Sylvia’s Mother, putrid. This version, it is different. I wouldn’t buy it, but an improvement on the original, in my mind.
