THE BEATLES COVER OF THE DAY- “IN MY LIFE”- JOHNNY CASH

The Beatles Cover of the Day is “In My Life” by Johnny Cash. The song appeared on The Beatles  “Rubber Soul” album in 1965- it was a Lennon-McCartney tune- and in this case a song that both worked on- the lyrics are certainly John Lennon’s. Paul McCartney has said he wrote the music. I’d give John 2/3rds credit with an assist from Paul. It has always been one of my favorite Beatles songs.

When Johnny Cash recorded it- for his American IV “The Man Comes Around” he was nearing the the end of his life. The song and album came out in November 2002, it would be the last album released during Johnny’s lifetime- he would die in September 2003. His version of “In My Life” doesn’t find him in the best of voice- his health at the time was failing fast but the selection of the song at that time seemed appropriate and he certainly puts emotion into it. I felt when I was first hearing it that here was a man at the end looking back on his life. A great read by the way on Johnny is Robert Hilburn’s book “Johnny Cash: A Life” which is an excellent biography of a man who lived a fascinating life.

  1. Very poignant, but heartbreaking.
It’s a different feeling from when, say, Sinatra sings “My Way,” which is contemplative but sort of triumphant at the same time.
    Ah, well…….*sigh*

    • I do like how Cash recorded pretty much until the end. He did what he loved doing until he couldn’t do it.

  2. That’s a good way of looking at it. How many of us get to do that? Probably not many. In that vein, it’s pretty inspiring.

  3. Johnny’s version certainly does this song justice. Can’t imagine him doing it so well with his younger voice.
