The Beatles Cover of the Day- “Day Tripper” by Otis Redding. The Beatles “Day Tripper” was a #5 hit in the US and a #1 in the UK- it was released by The Beatles as their Christmas single in 1965. A couple years later the great Otis Redding gave us his version- it was released as a single but didn’t do much on the charts in the UK it went to #43- in the US it went nowhere- but it is a great performance. Otis has one best groups of musicians in the world at the time backing him up- in Booker T. & The MG’s. Motown had far more hits- they were Hitsville USA- but I have always preferred that Stax recordings out of Memphis-  Gritty soul. Motown was more pop than soul in the 1960’s.

  1. Yep. It’s a southern thang Hans. Lewis Steinburg, Donald “Duck” Dunn and Al Jackson really laid down the funky beats and Steve Cropper rode on top of the rhythm. Redding was so special that he transcended the rhythm section. To me, Booker T and The MG’s are one of the best bands ever.
