HANS REMEMBERS- THURSDAY MAY 22, 1969- APOLLO 10 COMES CLOSE TO THE MOON

Hans Remembers- Thursday May 22, 1969- Apollo 10’s lunar module  nicknamed which  was given the nickname Snoopy and the lunar orbiter nicknamed Charlie Brown, separated for eight hours and the module with astronauts Tom Stafford and Gene Cernan made the closest approach yet to the Moon- coming within 15,400 feet [9.6 miles} of the Moon’s surface. Things got a little crazy during the second low pass over the Moon and the lunar module began to roll and Gene Cernan could be heard saying on live televison “Son of a bitch” before he got the lunar vehicle back under control. If everything goes well in less than two months there will be men on the surface of the Moon.

  1. I’d like to see the space program sending more people to the moon and space generally. Saw something recently about a plan to send a woman to the moon. You can easily argue that the money could be better spent elsewhere but the investment may well save us in the longer term…
