Van Morrison Roll with the Punches.jpg

  • VAN MORRISON: ROLL WITH THE PUNCHES: 2017:4 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: In the period from March 2015 until the end of 2019- Van released a total of 6 albums. This album has 5 covers and 5 originals. Another solid Van album this time its a Chicago blues style album- Jeff Beck makes an appearance on guitar.Van’s voice remains a powerhouse.

Ken Burns Jazz-Thelonious Monk

  • THELONIOUS MONK: KEN BURNS JAZZ: 2000: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: One of the 22 individual artist releases that were part of the Ken Burns Jazz series. Another great introduction to the music of a jazz immortal.

  • JOHN LENNON AND YOKO ONO: UNFINISHED MUSIC NO.2: LIFE OF THE LIONS:1969: 1/2 STAR OUT OF 5 STARS: If you ever want to give someone a headache- just play ten seconds of the first track on this ‘album’- Cambridge 1969. It is hard to believe that- this ‘song’ was played live before an audience in Cambridge- could anyone have been left in the theater 26:31 later. We have Yoko screaming to John’s electric guitar. The two Unfinished Music albums and the Wedding Album are an embarrassment- and the low point of John’s career. He was bound and determined to force Yoko on the world as this great artist. Sorry but without latching on to John Lennon no one would have ever heard of her-she would have been just another obscure unheard of artist-and the world would be a much better place. Not a fan. And that’s all I have to say about that.

So You Wannabe An Outlaw

  • STEVE EARLE: SO YOU WANNABE AN OUTLAW: 2017: 4 1/2 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: You never know from album to album what to expect from Steve Earle- after a Texas blues album and a duet album with Shawn Colvin- this album- dedicated to the memory of Waylon Jennings- is a back to his root album- an outlaw country album- and a very good one at that. The title track, The Firebreak Line, If Mama Could’ve Seen Me, Walking To LA and his tribute to Guy Clark Goodbye Michaelangelo are highlights.

  1. I’m *not* complaining about Steve but why does he make all of his covers look so similar. I am a visually oriented person and I don’t like not immediately recognizing an album by its cover. Train a Coming looked different than this and easy to spot.
