1969 Song of the Day is “Wedding Bell Blues” by The 5th Dimension. Wedding Bell Blues was written back in 1966 by singer-songwriter Laura Nyro- The 5th Dimension recorded it and released it in 1969 as a single and it went all the way to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Laura Nyro wrote the song at the age of 18 as a mini-suite. When the album was recorded the record producer didn’t allow her to keep her original arrangement- which led her to disown the album.

1969 would be a great year of success for The 5th Dimension- earlier in the year they had a #1 hit with Aquarius/ Let The Sunshine In, Working On A Groovy Thing went to #20 and then along came Wedding Bell Blues their second #1 of the year. Their album The Age of Aquarius went to #2.

  1. The world lost a great musician when she died. When I heard of her dead, I went out and bought her last pressings, “Stoned Soul Picnic: The Best of Laura Nyro.” I really love her rendition of ‘Eli’s Coming.’
