Laura Nyro wrote the song at the age of 18 as a mini-suite. When the album was recorded the record producer didn’t allow her to keep her original arrangement- which led her to disown the album.
1969 would be a great year of success for The 5th Dimension- earlier in the year they had a #1 hit with Aquarius/ Let The Sunshine In, Working On A Groovy Thing went to #20 and then along came Wedding Bell Blues their second #1 of the year. Their album The Age of Aquarius went to #2.

The world lost a great musician when she died. When I heard of her dead, I went out and bought her last pressings, “Stoned Soul Picnic: The Best of Laura Nyro.” I really love her rendition of ‘Eli’s Coming.’
I read that there was a guy in 5th Dimension called Bill l, and when they released it, he was dating another of the members.
Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr- members of the band were married in 1969.
First time hearing the Nero version. You can’t deny this is a beautifully composed song. McCoo’s voice is stronger but Nero’s is good as well.
