SONGS I LIKE BY ARTISTS I DON’T- “ME & BOBBY MCGEE”- JANIS JOPLIN

Songs I Like by Artists I Don’t- “Me& Bobby McGee” by Janis Joplin. I know I am in a minority but I am not and have never been a fan of Janis Joplin. Her singing sounds like two cats fighting at night in a dark alley. Me and Bobby McGee was written by Kris Kristofferson and Fred Foster. What a great song- Kristofferson early in his career was money in the bank- and while he has written dozens of great standard songs- nothing is ever going to come close to this song. It was a country hit for Roger Miller first.  Many other artists over the years have covered it- and why not it is such a wonderful song- but if any of them think they will top Janis on this they are just beating their heads against the wall. Janis Joplin nailed it. Janis recorded it just a few days before her death- and it was released as a single following her death and went to #1. Kris didn’t know she had even recorded it until he heard it the day after her death. Rolling Stone has it ranked at #148 on their 500 Greatest Songs list which may be too low. Again dozens of artists have attempted this song and I’ve heard a number of them- but no one even is in the ballpark with Janis on this particular song.

  1. I like her voice and her passion in singing. I also am not sure I could take a whole album’s worth at a time. I like Gordon Lightfoot’s rendition of Me & Bobby McGee.

    • It is impressive just the number of people who have tackled that song. Sometimes when one person nails it- others shy away but it is such a great great song…most of the versions I have heard are decent to good- but no one tops Janis or ever will I figure. I even like Kris’s version- singing bullfrog style!
