1969 Song of the Day is- “Love Can Make You Happy” by Mercy. When I saw this title and saw it was a #2 hit – I was certain I had never heard it before- then I played it and it came back- yes I remembered it but probably hadn’t heard it in 40 plus years. It peaked at #2- The Beatles “Get Back” blocked it from hitting the #1 slot. Mercy was a pop band from Florida. They had one album and one single that hit the Top 40 this one- and that was it. They still tour with the original lead singer- coming soon at a lounge near you. I am kind of shocked this song was so successful- sounds bland to me.
I loved this song back in 1969 when I was 13. But it was about as syrupy as AM Top 40 could get. Fortunately for me I graduated to FM shortly after this.
a pleasant and unoffensive type song.
Well, I definitely liked it in 1969. Whenever it came on the radio I used to fantasize about the prettiest girl in my eighth grade class being my girlfriend.
It sounds a lot like Tommy James & The Shondells. Pleasant and mellow tune ❤
