1969 Song of the Day- ‘Save The Country” by Laura Nyro. Save The Country was written by Laura Nyro was was on her third album New York Teadaberry. A different version of the song had been released as a single in 1968. The song was inspired by the assassination of Senator Robert Kennedy. Nyro had written the song within 48 hours of the assassination and the single was out before the end of that month- June 1968. A version of Save The Country was a #27 Hot 100 hit and a #10 adult contemporary hit for The 5th Dimension in 1970. Save The Country has also been covered by the likes of Rosanne Cash, Roberta Flack, Thelma Houston and Paul Revere and The Raiders.
