Hans remembers 50 years ago today- Monday March 17, 1969.
- In Israel Golda Meir was sworn in as Israel’s first female Prime Minister after winning a vote of confidence 84-12 in the Knesset. Prime Minister Levi Eshkol had died suddenly on February 26th and the Labor Party came together and selected the 70 year old Meir to replace him. Meir would serve as Prime Minister of Israel until 1974 when she resigned following the Yom Kippur War. She would die of lymphoma in 1978 at the age of 80.
- In baseball as spring training was going on- the Cardinals and Braves made a big trade. The St. Louis Cardinals sent 1967 MVP Orlando Cepeda to the Atlanta Braves for Joe Torre. The trade would be a winner for the Cardinals- Torre would go on in 1971 to win the NL MVP Award. Cepeda had a couple good years before becoming a part time player the rest of his career due to injuries. The talk around the campfire was the Braves traded Torre because of his role as a leader in the players union. The owners back then frowned upon such activity. Both Cepeda and Torre are in the Baseball Hall of Fame- Cepeda as a player- Torre as a manager.
