Hans Worst Hits of the 60’s- Cherish- by The Association. This was a huge mega hit in 1966- it went to #1 and held the position for 3 weeks. BMI ranked Cherish the #22 most played song of the 20th Century. Maybe it was played so much -because it was so boring- so inoffensive- it’s easy listening at its worst. The Association were masters of that easy listening- can’t possibly offend anyone sound. Look at their big hits- Along Comes Mary, Cherish, Windy, Never My Love- good for curing insomnia is about all. Cherish to me is the worst of that string of hits. There was a lot of great, cutting edge music in the 60’s- and the decade is celebrated for that but sometimes we tend to forget like any other time it also had its share of lame crap music- Cherish falls into that category for me.

  1. An interesting story that I heard about this group is that The Association played at the Monterey Pop festival and The Who and Jimi Hendrix supposedly were really angry that they had to play at the same show with a group like that – they hated that type of music!

  2. Cherish would have been quite useful in planning a date then. If nothing else, Imlike the way the Association harmonized. Still do.
We are on to Kansas City.

  3. Yeah, it’s such a familiar tune, it’s embedded in my neural pathways now and kind of feels like an old friend, regardless of its insipidness.

I love the story above. I can just see Hendrix or Daltry smoking a joint and staring broodingly at The Association as they played. Then maybe flicking the blunt at them rudely when they walked past backstage or sneering and basically just acting like mean girls in a high school!
