ALBUMS

Townes1.jpg

  • TOWNES VAN ZANDT: TOWNES VAN ZANDT: 1969: 4 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: Townes put out 2 albums in 1969- his 2nd and 3rd albums- this is the 3rd album. A highly acclaimed songwriter-{ Steve Earle’s two songwriting mentors- Townes and Guy Clark- he has done cover albums on both} A lot of these songs have been covered by others. Favorites here- Lungs, For The Sake Of The Song, Waiting Around To Die, None But The Rain and Columbine …  a songwriter’s songwriter.

Ourmother1.jpg

  • TOWNES VAN ZANDT: OUR MOTHER THE MOUNTAIN: 1969: 4 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: Townes second album- contains some of his better known songs-Be Here To Love Me,  Snake Mountain Blues, Our Mother The Mountain, Kathleen, Tecumseh Valley.  Steve Earle once said of Townes “the best songwriter in the whole world and I’ll stand on Bob Dylan’s coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that. ” That statement embarrassed Townes. Steve named his son- Justin Townes Earle.

Be the Cowboy.jpg

  • MITSKI: BE THE COWBOY: 2018: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: I’ve been coming back to this album now the last few days- and really enjoying it. I was going to list my favorite songs from it-but I think they all are. Will start going through all 5 of her albums tomorrow- great stuff!

Live at the Star Club, Hamburg.jpeg

  • JERRY LEE LEWIS: LIVE! AT THE STAR CLUB, HAMBURG: 1964: 5 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: With the news of The Killer- suffering a minor stroke- and on the road to recovery- I thought I’d listen to one of his albums. This is a great live album- you almost feel like you are  there. It is on the 1001 albums to hear list.  To have seen Jerry Lee in his prime must have been an experience. Hope for a quick recovery for The Killer.

Ramones - End of the Century cover.jpg

  • THE RAMONES:  END OF THE CENTURY: 1980: 4 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: The Ramones 5th album- produced by the madman Phil Spector. The idea was to expand their fan base. It is more ‘pop’ than the first four-which were punk classics- all 5 star recordings. In a way it worked- it would be the highest charting album of The Ramones career. There were no hit singles- The Ramones never had a hit. Favorites- Do You Remember Rock n Roll Radio, Rock And Roll High School, I’m Affected, Danny Says.

Badly Drawn Boy - The Hour of the Bewilderbeast.jpg

  • BADLY DRAWN BOY: THE HOUR OF BEWILDERBEAST: 2000: I ‘discovered’ Badly Drawn Boy [who is Damon Gough} reading Nick Hornby’s book 31 Songs {or Songbook} This album was a hit in the UK but didn’t cause a ripple in the US. 18 songs- I’d file the album under baroque pop. Musically and lyrically interesting listen. An album you need to spend some time with- which I haven’t for at least a few years. Comparisons are to Nick Drake and Elliott Smith. On the 1001 albums to hear list.

2007 re-release cover

  • DAVID BOWIE: THE BUDDHA OF SUBURBIA: 1993:3 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS:  A soundtrack to a TV show- this was slammed for the most part at the time. Bowie was out of favor in the 90’s- at least his releases from that time were. Bowie once said this was his favorite album. Was he serious? It received poor to mediocre reviews- this is one of my least played Bowie albums but it’s not THAT bad. There are some interesting moments especially the instrumentals.

Soul '69.jpg

  • ARETHA FRANKLIN: SOUL ’69: 1969: 4 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: Aretha had a big 1968 but this album in 1969 had little success as far as singles go- the two singles The Tracks Of My Tears and Gentle On My Mind failed to threaten the Top 40. This is a pretty good album though and while critic Stanley Booth’s comment at the time ” quite possibly the best record to appear in the last five years.” is a real head shaker–it didn’t deserve to be ignored and forgotten as it has been.

Instant Replay.jpg

  • THE MONKEES: INSTANT REPLAY: 1969: 3 1/2 STARS OUT OF 5 STARS: The album was made after their tv show had been cancelled- and Peter Tork had left the band. None of these songs appeared on the television show- there were no hits off the album and the album peaked at #32 on the album charts. Monkeemania was over- but this is a decent album which is a little surprising at this point in the game-especially with no hit singles anywhere to be found.

  1. What kind of music is Mitski? About Townes and Steve, I can see where Townes would be embarrassed by what Steve said. Steve is a great songwriter but he’s always ridden on Townes’ coattails and could never measure up to either Townes or Bob D. I like the guy, just being realistic.
